Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Intervention for Overweight Population

Objective

The Community Education Intervention Project will provide the intern an opportunity to gain experience applying the Nutrition Care Process in a community setting at their affiliated community practice site. The intern will be responsible for performing a needs assessment, utilizing the assessment data to identify a problem in the targeted population, implementing a related intervention, and evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention. An emerging trend should be highlighted through the identification of an emerging trend related to the health of communities and/or the delivery of the intervention to the targeted population.

Executive Summary

During the community rotation, the intern was able to work at the Catherine McAuley Clinic, which offers free healthcare to the working, uninsured citizens of the Northwestern Indiana area. Since much of the population is overweight, the intern developed and facilitated a healthy eating and lifestyle class. The intern covered a healthy diet, proper portion sizes and physical activity. This class was promoted via flyer that the intern made. The class lasted for an hour and a half and after evaluating the pre and post-test, in class assignment and verbal feedback from healthcare workers and participants, the class was a success. All participants were grateful for the education and they all believe that they can start eating a healthy diet and incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.
